An American, Pastor Burt now living in the Philippines had neighborhood children frequently coming by and asking if they could use his computers to access the Internet. Being hospitable, he accommodated them. But in so doing he requested,
“When you are done, be sure and turn off the computers.” The children assured him, “Pastor, don’t worry. We will take good care of these two computers. We will turn off these two computers for you.”
Pastor Burt would come back in few hours to find that the children were not there, but that the computers were still running. This happened several times till he concluded that being responsible was not something that
these young children were yet focused enough to embrace. Still he didn’t want to deny the children the delight of seeing the world through the Internet.
Beyond being a priest, Pastor Burt has been programming computers for over 40 years. He decided then to create a program that would police the children who used these computers in his absence; so that the program would turn off the computers once the children stopped using them.
This approach worked. Pastor Burt was able to remain hospitable in letting the children have access to his computers, while saving both the computers and electricity by turning the computes off once the children lost interest and left.
Pastor Burt thought about this, “I’m sure I am not alone in this. People are inadvertently wasting both their computers and electricity all over the world. We seem to have learned to turn off lights when we leave a room. But for some reason turning off our computers
doesn't get done.
The behavior makes no sense at all: Leaving a
high-end 600 watt gaming computer on is equivalent to leaving 15 electric lights
burning. Certainly, there must be a professionally written program that addresses this
computer need.”
Expecting to find it, Pastor Burt did a diligent search for that program.
What
he found available was both limited and from a system’s perspective quite disappointing. He concluded, “This I can do. There are so many orphans in this country, so many young children abused within adult jails, young girls sold into slavery and prostitution, possibly if I did a very good job and made this program available to the world, hopefully whatever money this program earns could be used to build an orphanage and help these children, or even a number of orphanages. This may be like throwing sand at a mountain, but it is a start.”
